Your friend – the Fisherman (as a Side Hustle)
How about paying a fisherman to learn the secrets of the local sea/river? It's a win-win, isn't it. You just have to sell it to them!
This article is a part of the series: ‘Online Side Hustle Ideas (on a silver platter)’. Here’s a list of all past and upcoming ideas.
This one is a bit farfetched, but I like it nonetheless 😊
Fishing is one of the most popular hobbies out there.
If you asked me before, I’d say fishing is super boring. That’s because I sucked at it.
That was until I caught a “Saint Peter’s fish” (wonder fish). It was not hard at all. I just went fishing with my father-in-law who knew the nuts and bolts of fishing, so it was more like a fun park. We would fish for all kinds of fish with various techniques.
At some point, we even started fishing for shrimps (shrimping?). He knew everything about fishing and had all the right equipment.
Suddenly… fishing was fun.
The problem
Fishing is tough.
You wake up early. It is usually cold outside and then during the day (in the summer), it becomes extremely hot.
The fish-ways remain mysterious to most of us.
But not all of us.
You have all seen fishermen that know the sea very well. They know all the fish, when they migrate, how they do it, what waters they prefer, the bait they bite, the appropriate rods, etc.
Problem is – fishermen don’t have a way to monetize this knowledge.
You are the “city boy” looking for a thrill on a sunny Saturday. You can spend days and days without being successful at fishing, ‘cause there’s no one to help you out. But you really don’t want to go home empty-handed.
Fishermen know the secrets of fishing, and they exploit them to their advantage. They would not just tell you what they have been learning for years and years, would they?
The solution
Well, of course they would, for a price…
And why wouldn’t you pay them that price? They can be your eyes and ears. They often live there so they can tell you if there is fish or there isn’t – no need for you to take the long road to the river or the sea for nothing.
Not only will they tell you if there’s fish, but they can also consult you on the bait, on the equipment – everything.
It’s a win-win situation.
Target customer
All fishermen-wannabees around the world who have a desk job and don’t have any time in their life to devote to research fishing properly.
You can hand them the information on a silver platter and they will keep coming to you for advice. After all, chances are you made their Saturday!
These people could become your long-time clients, looking for your help and advice every time they want to go fishing.
How to start this as a side hustle
This is the part where fishermen get attentive. (If you are the city boy, please forward this to someone who may be interested or make sure to set them up).
Okay. That’s better.
You are a fisherman and you know all about your fish. You are in the water or on the shore and you are about to start fishing.
Your audience is at work on their computers in the city. What if you had a simple website where they could still be on their computers, but they could pay you for a lesson or two on fishing?
Simply take out your phone and film everything you are doing. They’ll be biting like the fish you are about to catch. You can easily get a set-up with video, card payments, and even a website to be available online – all with 3veta.com.
Marketing yourself is the hard one, making this idea fall a bit flat.
There are numerous YouTube channels on fishing.
If you, dear reader, own one – this is a way for you to monetize your craft!
If you aren’t – tough luck. You can try running a YouTube channel. The demand is there, but you’ll need to devote much more time.
For starters, you can try some Facebook groups or forums where people discuss fishing. However, this will also be a bit hard.
Finally, if a “city boy” sent you this – you already have a client. Get started with 3veta and don’t wait for this chance to go away. This is just the beginning as they will be sure to tell their friends about it.
Extra thoughts
This idea stemmed from the fact that I’ve seen many fishing channels on YouTube, which I believe don’t make any money. If you have any online activity or audience related to fishing, don’t hesitate, but start monetizing it with this idea.
Get yourself a tripod or any other equipment that could keep your phone steady. A helmet mount could be a good idea, too! You will be busy with your hands, so make sure you don’t think about your phone too much.
Related to 2, headphones are a must.
Workshops are also not a bad idea. You don’t need to be at sea to teach about fishing. Simply spread your fishing tools on a table and explain to your students what is what. There’s certainly an audience for this.
